This photograph by Shepp is part of his larger project Occupying Wall Street, a visual record of the protest in Zuccotti Park, which lasted almost two months. Shepp photographed the participants of the demonstration on a weekly basis, using a 4×5 view camera with black-and-white film. The portraits were continuously added to his installation at the vitrine of Steven Kasher Gallery, where visitors also contributed their comments. His work highlights the spontaneous voices against economic inequality, and questions the ambiguous representation of protesters in popular media.
Accra Shepp (1962, USA) lives and works in New York City. He graduated from Princeton University and holds a Master’s degree from NYU. Shepp has exhibited all over the world and his work is in collections such as The Art Institute of Chicago and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
