Niitsu’s practice explores the history of image production, visual communication, and new technologies. The title of this work #16071945 is the time and date of the first nuclear weapon detonation – conducted by the U.S. Army as part of the “Manhattan Project” – that marked the beginning of the atomic age. She experiments with lithography on limestone to create an electronic tablet with the iconic image of the bomb printed as the device’s background. Using a material that signifies durability to create an object representative of immediate communication, Niitsu questions technology’s longevity, our conception of time, and the ability of powerful images to change societal thinking.
