Andrea Caretto & Raffaella Spagna

Falsi Frutti

2015, Installation (beeswax, wood ash, plaster, white lead, colophony, glass, metal). Produced by Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto, Courtesy of the artists

The projects of Andrea Caretto and Raffaella Spagna are often linked to ecological concerns, especially the interaction between organisms and their environment and the contact points between nature and culture.

Falsi Frutti (False Fruits) depicts wax reproductions of 105 ancient varieties of apples from the Piedmont region of Italy. These models are made by Davide Furno, using a technique developed by the well-known 19th-century pomologist Francesco Garnier Valletti. The apples are presented as sculptural objects at different levels of processing, and the visitor is invited to observe the morphological diversity of each one. The fruits appear as empty shells, which lack their content and become the disruptive remains of organisms that belong to an almost-extinct farming culture.

Raffaella Spagna (1967, Rivoli) and Andrea Caretto (1970, Turin) both live and work in Cambiano, Turin. They have collaborated since 2002, exhibiting in public and private institutions in Italy and abroad. They are among the founders of Progetto Diogene, and they cooperate with IRIS at the University of Turin. They have recently exhibited at Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte, Poirino (2018), Fondazione Zegna, Turin (2017, 2018) and GAM, Turin (2012, 2018).
