Butcher’s Broom, Creeping Butterscotch

2011, Watercolours, coloured pencils and black tea on paper

IMAGO MUNDI COLLECTION

Bianca Casady explores her personal myths by questioning the social constructs of gender and race. This work on paper is part of a wider series that focuses on the idea of imprisonment. The eccentric and multi-talented artist explores themes of trauma, reconstruction and power by feminizing the male as a means of domination. Casady employs rough techniques and antithetical images (such as flowers and wounds) to transform a prison’s stark reality into a stage of beauty and horror. A detail of this artwork became the cover of her music album Oscar Hocks (2016).

Bianca Casady (1982, USA) lives in Paris and New York City. She has exhibited worldwide at Deitch Projects in New York, Art Basel in Miami, BOZAR in Brussels, and at the Moscow Biennale. She is one half of the musical duo CocoRosie, which frequently tours and performs at prominent international festivals.
