Irma Blank’s works represent alterations in the use of writing as with the coercive repetition shown in the works exhibited here. Blank, who has often exhibited alongside Visual Poets without ever identifying with them, reflects on the very nature of writing as a form of expression to be looked at rather than read.
Irma Blank (1934– ) lives and works in Milan. Born in Germany but moved to Sicily at a young age, Blank held her first solo exhibition in 1965 in Siracusa (Italy). Blank’s artistic practice uses writing as an intuitive and pre-logical tool. The artist creates works in series, such as the Eigenschriften, Trascrizioni, Urzeichen. She has participated in many group exhibitions such as the Documenta at Kassel (1977), Venice Biennale (1978), and XIV Quadrennial of Rome (2005). Her works are part of public and private collections including Museo del 900 (Milan), Museion (Bolzano) and GAM (Turin).
