Maripol is considered the gatekeeper of 1980s club culture. In the late 1970s, she arrived in the United States and immediately became part of the city’s creative pulse. She worked in fashion, music and art, and has influenced the image-making of many leading artists. In Eyes Are the Reflection of Your Soul, Maripol used her favourite SX-70 camera to photograph the celebrities at the legendary Studio 54. Her Polaroid images of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Madonna, Grace Jones, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol document one of the most vibrant times of the art scene of New York.

Maripol (1955, Morocco) lives and works in New York City. She is an artist, film producer, fashion designer and stylist. Her work has been included in exhibitions at MoMA P.S.1, Fondation Cartier in Paris, Brooklyn Museum, Portland Museum of Art, Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris and Guggenheim Bilbao.
