Furutani’s practice engages with the formation and limitations of language in the digital age. Inspired by Nessie of Loch Ness in Scotland, the artist coined the title Galassie to refer to an unseen monster of the galaxy. Furutani was inspired by Miguel Nicolelis’ research from 2013 which, using computer technology, showed the brain connection between two primates. It uncovered the potential to dramatically change the way we approach global communication. Intertwining this research with found footage from the Internet, Furutani’s video describes the world after the development of technology and explains the two options for humanity’s continued existence in a post-digital future.

Shigetoshi Furutani was born in 1981 in Mie, Japan. He lives and works in Tokyo. He studied at the Royal College of Art and Tokyo University of the Arts. He has exhibited at Daiwa Anglo- Japanese Foundation (London), Athens Digital Art Festival (Greece), and Tate Modern (London).
