Sedira’s multidisciplinary practice considers identity, memory, and the transmission of history through storytelling. In Mother Tongue, three generations of women from the same family exchange childhood memories. Born in three different countries, they attempt to communicate in their native languages – the artist in French, her mother in Arabic, and her daughter in English – but the dialogue becomes fragmented. This autobiographical video addresses the shifts in cultural identities caused by migration.
Zineb Sedira was born in Paris in 1963. She lives in London, works in Paris and Algiers. She has exhibited at the Tate Britain (London), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Brooklyn Museum (New York) and Arab Museum of Modern Art (Doha, Qatar). Her work is in major collections including the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (Vienna), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), and the Arts Council of England.
