Armen Agop unites sculpture and painting in a meditation on the power of darkness to generate light. The complete synergy of body, mind and spirit lies at the core of Agop’s practice, for whom art is a spiritual form of asceticism. If the three-dimensional black granite of Oltre il tempo (Beyond Time) recalls the pure monumentality of ancient Egyptian sculpture, the works on canvas start from the smallest graphic element – the point – to unveil, in a gestural mantra, the mysterious fountains of light that are born out of complete darkness. The viewer is called to witness the slow turning toward the light of the globe itself.
An Egyptian-born sculptor of Armenian descent, ARMEN AGOP (1969, Cairo) has been living and working in Pietrasanta, Italy, for the last 19 years. Increasingly present on the international art scene with exhibitions across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, he has developed a personal relation with matter and time, resulting in works that can appear as perplexing as futuristic beings and UFOs, while at the same time recalling the simplicity and soberness of ancient Egyptian art.
