Bidibidi Refugee Settlement – Uganda

Originally, Bidibidi was a small village in north-western Uganda. However, in August 2016 it became the Bidibidi Refugee Settlement with an area of 250 km². Since then, the Ugandan government and NGOs have consolidated the settlement and continued to set up camp after camp to contain the growing numbers of asylum seekers from South Sudan, making it one of the largest settlements in Africa. Today it is a huge, empty and barren patch of land near the small Ugandan border town of Yumbe and is home to around 270,000 refugees, most of whom have fled violence and unrest in South Sudan.

The participation of the 11 artists from the Bidibidi settlement was made possible thanks to the collaboration with artist Joel Bergner and Artolution, one of the most important international NGOs working with refugee artists.
