Bodies in Alliance by Marinella Senatore

Marinella Senatore's poetics

Marinella Senatore is a feminist artist who lives betweet Rome and London. She is a multidisciplinary artist trained in music, fine arts, and cinema.

Over the past ten years, Marinella Senatore has been developing a participatory artform that experiments with the creative power of the group, building dialogues. In her work, Marinella Senatore focuses on social issues such as emancipation, empowerment, equality, aggregation systems, and working conditions. Her practice combines aesthetic research with a strong collective and participatory dimension, a transformative power of social engagement: the public space becomes the political space, because politics, like art, calls for a plural and common dimension of action. Through various moments of encounter, Senatore reflects on the political nature of collective formations and rituals and offers the public an opportunity for social change.

Her approach always acknowledges the surrounding context, in which the artworks become functional structures and create new ambiences through the use of multiple media (lights, sound effects, etc.) combining different language forms including pop culture, dance, music, cinema, mass events, and activism.

Bodies in Alliance: Marinella Senatore's artwork

Bodies in Alliance by Marinella Senatore is a luminaria inspired by the typical decorations that illuminate the cities of Southern Italy during special occasions. Halfway between the podium and the theatrical stage, Senatore’s installation is configured as a celebration of citizenship and is dedicated to all the people who, with their daily actions, build new ideas and forms of collectivity. The artist suggests rethinking the alliances between bodies, soliciting emotional rapprochement despite the physical distance; getting on the podium is therefore the celebration of every single individual who, on a daily basis, constitutes the community.

The work is the first to have been commissioned and purchased by Fondazione Imago Mundi and was inaugurated on 21 June 2021, at 21:00, in the entrance square to our exhibition site Gallerie delle Prigioni in Treviso, on the occasion of the summer solstice and the opening of the “Italian Twist” exhibition.

The work Bodies in Alliance was also temporarily exhibited at 21WOL in Milan in September 2021 on the occasion of the “Active Art” series of conferences, organized by the Imago Mundi Foundation.

The work Bodies in Alliance was also temporarily exhibited at 21WOL in Milan in September 2021 on the occasion of the series of 3 live conferences “ACTIVE ART. When art activates communities and territories “, organized by Fondazione Imago Mundi during Milan Art Week, with the desire to investigate how art can become an activator of social and cultural processes of community involvement, empowerment and local development.

On this occasion, Wednesday 15 September 2021, at 6.30 pm, we hosted a conversation between Marinella Senatore and Roberta Tenconi, curator of Hangar Bicocca. It was discussed how, starting from a close and universal comparison with the history, culture and local social structures, the artist’s works have been able to activate some virtuous processes of individual and civic awareness within different communities, in different places of the world.
