Nakivale Refugee Settlement – Uganda

The Nakivale Refugee Settlement is the oldest refugee camp in Uganda, established in 1959. It provides shelter and assistance to displaced individuals and families. Located in the Isingiro district, about 300 km south-west of Kampala, Nakivale hosts around 120,000 refugees from countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan and Somalia.
Uganda’s progressive refugee policies and inclusive approach have allowed refugees to settle in areas like Nakivale and access essential services, such as shelter, food, healthcare, education, water and sanitation. Nakivale is organised into zones representing specific nationalities, thus promoting cultural identity. Despite resource limitations, the camp has become a vibrant community with schools, health centres and markets. The resilience of the refugees and the support of the host communities have contributed to creating an environment of integration and peaceful coexistence. The 15 artists from Nakivale, part of the artistic collective Nyandja Arts, have been selected by curator Trevor Mukholi.
